It was after I had my first baby that I wanted to try something new for weight loss. The first thing I did was join a KettleBell studio. Lucky for me the owner was an expert in nutrition. She told me, "Sarah, diet is 80% of your results, exercise and nurture/nature the rest"

Hmm.... you mean the "beat my body into submission" method I've only ever known isnt the best!??!

I chose to listen to her presentation and followed it up with some additional research. And what I found on sugar, HFCS, MSG, Chemicals, disturbed me to the core.

So this post is dedicated to sugar. Lets break it down.

This is an ounce of sugar. A SHOT GLASS!

IMG_4221.jpg

It is comprised of 28.65 grams.

There are 4-5 grams in a teaspoon.

How many grams are in single serving of the yogurt in your fridge? Go look.

I'm pretty sure you will find between 20-30g in 1 cup (ummm 4-6 teaspoons!).

*A half of cup will of course have have half so double check your serving size.

Start looking at the dressings and condiments in your fridge, Mama....

Are you appalled yet?

Ok move to the pantry, look at any box of cereal (other than plain Cheerios).

It is reccomended that an adult consume ONLY 12 teaspoons of sugar a day, but 6 is best.

Wow. 6 teaspoons only between 24-30 grams! Some of us will get that (or at least half of the reccomended dose) in one serving "healthy greek yogurt" we eat at breakfast.

Sugar makes us gain weight. Here is why:

Sugar is a form of glucose. Glucose that isn't used right away for metabolism needs is turned into insulin which allows blood sugar (or blood glucose) to get into cells to provide them with energy. When you eat, your body breaks down food, producing glucose. This is your body's source of energy for everything it does, from working and thinking to exercising. For glucose to get into the cells, it requires insulin. Eating lots of sugary food causes the insulin to spike and tells the body to store fat!

Further: Michael Roizen, MD, Internal Medicine, answered Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that helps the body store and use glucose. Think of insulin as the U.S. Postal Service and glucose as the mail; insulin is responsible for delivering that glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream into muscle, fat, liver, and most other cells so that your body can use it for fuel. I wish insulin had a similar mantra to the USPS-neither blood, nor fat, nor DNA will keep insulin from delivering glucose throughout the body-but doesn't quite work that way. And problems happen either when the pancreas doesn't make enough insulin or because various parts of the body block insulin and prevent it from delivering glucose to those cells

Eating too much sugar causes us to produce too much insulin! AND Store FAT! Watch your sugar intake, Mamas! ~Briana
