Making a Shopping List

Don't wander the aisles for hours! Use my shopping list template to save time at the grocery store.

We've all been there: a few items scratched on a crumpled piece of paper, roaming the aisles at the grocery store trying to find things, backtracking, and generally wasting time. And the final insult? You get home, look around, and think, "There's nothing to eat!"

Once I had kids, I had to pull it together when it came to grocery shopping. We live 25 minutes from the store, and as someone who nursed my babies, that only gave me so much time to get there, find and purchase my items, and rush home before I had an angry infant on my hands!

So I devised an easy method that I want to share with you! It allows me to not only make sure I pick up every item that I need, but save time in the store as well!

I have to say that making my grocery list is a really enjoyable time for me each week. That sounds crazy, right? What seems like a mundane task can be made better without much effort. First, I wait until the kids have gone to bed. I put on a show or movie I've been wanting to watch, make myself a little snack, have a glass of wine or a cup of almond milk or a LaCroix sparkling water and settle in to watch TV and peruse the recipes I've saved throughout the week! I know this sounds immensely lame, but I find it really relaxing!

The first step is to go through your recipes and decide what you want to make for the week. And I mean everything; breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. Once you've decided your meals, write them on the back of your list so you don't forget!

And now you're ready to make your list! You can tailor it to meet the needs of your particular store, but overall this should work for most people.

Separate into 4 sections. This represents the different areas you will hit up during your grocery run. Packaged goods, Produce, Dairy, and Meat/Freezer--leaving a small space at the bottom for "Other", which is for any home goods or toiletry items.

Then go through the recipes you chose above and list the items you need in the appropriate area on your list.

And there you have it! My complete list for a weeks worth of groceries. And look at the Fresh portion compared to the Packaged! Lots of real foods coming into our house. I should note that all items on this list will be purchased Organic unless I am completely unable to find that option.

Hopefully this list will help some of you have more successful trips to the grocery store, happy shopping! ~Briana
