With a title like "OMG!" you're expecting this DVD to either focus on 14 year-old girls or be the biography of Joey Styles, but this turned out to be neither. Instead, it's a 2011 compilation of various exciting, thrilling and car-crash moments throughout WWE's history.

 

Let's be clear: all fifty of these were carefully staged and meant to be visually cool and/or spectacular. You won't see the tragic Owen Hart or Darren Drozdov accidents, for example (nor should you on DVD). But it's important to get that out of the way.

 

What you do get is a collection of two to three minute segments about each "OMG!" moment, complete with pop-up commentary from the usual cast of WWE DVD-friendly personalities including John Cena, Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler, Booker T, David Otunga, CM Punk, Santino Marella, Dolph Ziggler, Wade Barrett, The Miz, Curt Hawkins, Daniel Bryan and William Regal (with former WWE guys Todd Grisham, Matt Striker and Chris Masters also making appearances).

 

If this weren't about wrestling, the two-hour program would be custom-made for the E! Network.

 

Are the "OMG!" segments interesting? Sure, but if you've been watching wrestling for the past 30 years like me, you've likely seen almost all of them before - either on another DVD, via YouTube, or live as they happened. In fact, there was only one segment (The Undertaker tombstoning a pre-Triple H era Hunter Hearst Helmsley on an escalator at Penn Station) that I'd merely heard about and not seen before.

 

That's not say some aren't fun to watch for nostalgia value. The "twin referee" scandal during the infamous Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant match in 1988 is always worth a view ("how much did he pay for the plastic surgery, brother?"). I could watch Undertaker toss Mick Foley off the top of Hell In A Cell a thousand times; same with Stone Cold Steve Austin drenching Vince McMahon with a hose-ful of beer. And Brock Lesnar superplexing The Big Show as the ring structure crumbles around them is as spectacular as it is staged.

 

Having said that.... not all "OMG!" moments are created equally. Some segments - Tim White trying to kill himself (which CM Punk openly mocks) and the Triple H-Stephanie McMahon wedding, I'm looking at you!

 

But without including WCW, ECW or any of the vast other footage WWE owns, I suppose they weren't able to come up with quite another legitimately cool moments to fill a DVD.

 

The bonus footage isn't really anything to write home about. You have a few of the segments played out in full, and some of the matches as well, including Kurt Angle vs. Shane McMahon, Foley vs. Edge, The Hardyz vs. The Dudleyz vs. Edge & Christian (TLC II) and more. But again, you've probably got many of these matches on other DVD's if you're as diligent a collector as I am (only the aforementioned Penn Station match struck me as being a rarity).

 

On balance, I'd recommend doing what I did: catch the two-hour DVD program on Netflix, but you certainly don't need to own this particular one.
